September is Healthy Aging Month, and the population is growing older around the globe. In less than two decades, the United States Census Bureau projects that adults 65 and older will outnumber children under age 18 for the first time in America’s history, and by 2060, 24 percent of Americans will be in their golden years. In coastal Georgia, nearly 24 percent – more than one million – of the state’s residents are already age 65 and older, more than the entire population of some states.

An army of volunteers canvas Chatham, Bryan, Effingham and Liberty Counties every day. They are about 500 strong and they make sure the region’s senior citizens don’t go hungry.

Pride Pools, Spas & Leisure Products has partnered with Senior Citizens, Inc. to collect fans with a FILL A HOT TUB CAMPAIGN.  The goal is to fill as many hot tubs as possible to collect fans for qualifying seniors in efforts to protect seniors from the heat during the summer.

On Friday, July 1, 2022, the Beta Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. continued its annual support of the Savannah Seniors Center Annual Fan Drive by contributing fifty-seven (57) box fans. This is the fraternity’s third consecutive year supporting the center and this worthy cause. It is our small but yet impactful effort to help our most vulnerable population with some level of protection against the summer heat. We are and shall always remain First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All.

At 81 years of age, Duane Green never expected to be rescued by a gray and white cat he calls Bootsie. But that’s exactly what happened five years ago when she kept showing up at his Richmond Hill home. The Montana native ended up adopting her, and her presence is a calming force in his life.

According to Patti Lyons, president of Senior Citizens, Inc., the organization works with Meals on Wheels to serve some of Chatham County’s oldest residents. Lyons said Subaru is a long-time supporter of Meals on Wheels, and Senior Citizens Inc. just received a grant of a little over $10,000 to support its food service program.

In addition to helping out occasionally with pet food, cat litter, and flea medication, Meals on Wheels America and PetSmart Charities recently covered some unexpected and expensive veterinary bills. Lois is grateful, not just for the financial support, but for the recognition that pets play an important role in all of our lives, regardless of age.

Did you know Meals on Wheels offers assistance to pets through its Meals on Wheels Loves Pets grant program? Frank Douse, Jr. of Savannah received assistance for his four-legged friend Blade, including a wellness check, vaccinations, and a deworming.

Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people age successfully, recently announced it earned more than $10,000 by participating in the 2021-2022 Subaru Share the Love® Event. Over the past 14 years, Subaru and its retailers, including Chatham Parkway Subaru, have helped Meals on Wheels deliver more than 2.5 million meals nationwide to seniors in need. 

The intense heat is a major topic as of Monday and WTOC wants to make sure you stay safe, no matter if you’re working outside, enjoying the beach or even in your home. Organizations like Senior Citizens Incorporated are working to make sure everyone stays as comfortable as possible.

Senior Citizens, Inc. kicked off its annual fan drive Wednesday. The effort helps protect seniors from the heat as we head into summer. To qualify, seniors must be 65 years or older and have a low income.

A Savannah nonprofit called Senior Citizens Inc. hosted their annual event to honor those who have positively impacted the community. The luncheon took place on Skidaway Island, celebrating three honorees with a theme of "Legends, Leaders, and a Life Well Lived."

If Americans 50 and older were counted as their own country, they’d constitute the world’s third-largest economy. That’s from a 2019 AARP study that also found that this group’s economic impact will triple by the year 2050, increasing spending from $8.7 trillion in 2020 to a projected $15 trillion in 2030.

At Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI), our vision is for everyone to have a life well lived. I am a little embarrassed to say that while I have always embraced this vision, it was the loss of Mrs. M. that truly brought this ideal to life to me and made me want to define what constitutes a life well lived. Is it the things we accomplish? The places we travel and the adventures we have? The mark we leave on our community? The number of lives we touch?
