65 Years of Reimagining Aging

Our Story & Mission

Who We Are

For more that 65 years, Senior Citizens Inc. (SCI) has been the trusted resource for older adults and their families across coastal Georgia. Our mission is simple, yet powerful: We help people age successfully.

What began as a grassroots effort in Savannah has grown into a comprehensive network of services designed to support older adults through every stage of aging—with dignity, purpose, and compassion

Our Story

In the 1950s, Harley C. “Nippy” Morrison gathered a group of friends to make sack lunches for older neighbors who could no longer prepare their own meals. This group of civic-minded people then delivered these lunches to thirteen older adults.

As with anything in Savannah, the word quickly spread and it wasn’t long before Mr. Morrison realized that more than just his neighbors needed help in dealing with the unique challenges of aging.

His vision, along with other key members of the founding team including Ruth Byck and Hunter Leaf Sr., grew into the creation of the non-profit agency, Senior Citizens Inc., that would provide a variety of services to help older adults maintain their independence and dignity.

A Legacy of Care & Innovation

From those first sack lunches, SCI has grown into a regional leader in aging services. We have:

  • Delivered nearly 7 million meals through our Meals on Wheels program

  • Opened Neighborhood Centers to foster friendship, activity, and purpose

  • Launched DayBreak Respite Care and Adult Day Health Centers for those needing specialized care

  • Developed transportation, caregiver support, and wellness programs to meet evolving needs

As part of our commitment to lifelong learning, SCI also created The Learning Center, a place where older adults can take classes, explore new skills, and engage in thoughtful conversations. From art workshops and writing courses to humanities and cultural lectures, The Learning Center empowers older adults to stay intellectually curious and meaningfully connected to the world around them.

While we’ve grown with the community — we’ve always remained true to our founders’ belief: aging should be met with respect, support, and a continued sense of purpose.

Our Mission: Helping People Age Successfully

For us, aging successfully means more than living longer—it means living well. Our approach is built on what we believe are the Four Pillars of Successful Aging:

  1. Body – Supporting physical health through nutrition, fitness, and preventative care

  2. Mind – Encouraging lifelong learning, memory support, and creative exploration

  3. Purpose – Providing opportunities for older adults to share skills, wisdom, and leadership

  4. Community – Fostering connection through daily interactions, friendships, and support systems
