Karen Dove Barr’s newest novel, Night’s a Shadow, Day’s a Shine, explores Reconstruction through the lives of enslaved “Geechees” Lizzie and her daughter Dicie. In conversation with TLC director Roger Smith, the author describes the effects on Skidaway Island of Sherman’s famous meeting which resulted in Field Order 15, the infamous “forty acres and a mule” promise.
